Beyond the Face

In art, the face has long served as a timeless canvas for the expression of emotions, experiences and cultural identities. It is a subject as ancient as it is contemporary.
Today, however, the face ceases to be merely a recognisable form and becomes a multifaceted field of experimentation, identity, transformation and critique. It turns into an archive of experience, a a bearer of lived experience and memory, where the personal converges with the collective.

The digital age and technological advances have revolutionised how we perceive and represent faces. We live in the most narcissistic era when it comes to our self-image. The relentless circulation of faces across social networks has reshaped notions of beauty, authenticity and uniqueness, while simultaneously provoking questions about the "reality" behind the images we encounter.

The works in this exhibition range from inner psychological intensity and the cool detachment of the media gaze. Through personal and collective narratives, the participating artists from different countries explore the many images of the face, mapping the complexities of contemporary reality.

Platforms Project in Athens is an international exhibition of the independent art scene, held annually since 2013. In 2025, the event will take place from October 9 to 12 at the historic Old Tobacco Factory.

The project is organized with financial support and under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, as well as under the patronage of the Region of Attica and AICA Hellas (the Greek branch of the International Association of Art Critics).

These organizations provide support and official recognition to Platforms Project as one of the significant contemporary art events in Athens.

Another important organizer and coordinator is the Platforms Project art initiative and team, led by co-directors Artemis Potamianou and Michalis Argyrou.

This makes the project a vital platform for independent artists and experimental collectives from around the world.
